In 1996, Dartmouth became part of the Halifax Regional Municipality, yet it maintains the distinct characteristics it has developed over the past 250 years. Often overshadowed by its flashier twin Halifax, Dartmouth has a unique place in our history.
This harbour in the heart of Nova Scotia at the edge of the continent, has sheltered army and refugee, made the city a cimpanion for its more famous sister. Chebucto "the biggest harbour" say the Mi'kmaq, "the finest that nature could form" said an 18th century French governor, the Warden of the Honour of the North to the British who crowned the sugarloaf hill overlooking the North Atlantic with a star-shaped Citadel which looks across at the green Dartmouth hills
